Port Alberni is a lovely community located in the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District on Vancouver Island in the province of British Columbia. Port Alberni has a population of 17,743 which expands to 25,396 including the rural population. It lies within the Alberni Valley which is at the head of the Alberni Inlet, Vancouver Island’s longest inlet.
Port Alberni is named after Captain Pere d’Alberní, who was the Spanish officer that commanded Fort San Miguel at Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island’s west coast in the 1700’s. Prior to the European settlers, the Alberni Valley and the most of the West Coast of Vancouver Island was the territory of the Tseshaht and Hupacasath First Nations of the Nuu-Chah-Nulth Tribes. The Nuu-chah-nulth people were originally called the Nootka. Many places in Port Alberni and the surrounding area have names which originate with the Nuu-chah-nulth incluidng: Somass, meaning: washing; Kitsuksis, meaning: log across mouth of creek; Pacheena, meaning: foamy and Nootka, meaning: go around.
Port Alberni was an industrial resource centred town with logging and mining supporting the main economy. Today, this thriving community is a major centre for local, regional, and provincial governments. It is also the major supply centre and medical service provider for Vancouver Island’s west coast communities of Bamfield, Tofino, and Ucluelet. With the recent changes in the economy and their rising value, the natural resource industry is once again taking centre stage but in a much more different way than it did historically.
